Anne Frey Dean, RN, BSN, LRM, has been actively involved in the ambulatory surgery world since 1976 when she established two “outpatient” recovery rooms as a PACU charge nurse at the Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio,Texas. The need for such a room became apparent when trying to counsel outpatients about their postoperative care in the busy acute recovery environment. Upon becoming the Operating Room Supervisor at this same hospital she developed an “outpatient” operating room after observing the outpatient’s being bumped from the various operating rooms for longer cases and emergencies.  Shortly after that, Anne joined the SW Texas Methodist Hospital staff and developed a 13,000 sf ambulatory surgery center which was so successful that within three years 7000 cases/year were being performed there.  During this time, Anne began speaking at major national ambulatory meetings to include delivering the first talk on ambulatory surgery centers at the AORN national convention.  Anne has spoken internationally on the subject and has published over 45 articles regarding various aspects of ambulatory surgery to include chapters in 5 textbooks.

Anne and her daughter and business partner, Stephanie Smelt, founded their company in 1985 and since then has been instrumental in establishing over 600 centers in the US and abroad.
